150 Barrow Street

NEW YORK

At the penthouse of 150 Barrow Street, frenchCALIFORNIA was invited to craft a layered and immersive design narrative that reflects the elegance of the West Village and the calm sophistication of a waterfront retreat. Set within a newly completed boutique development, the residence serves as a quiet counterpoint to the city beyond—offering both scale and intimacy across 3,075 square feet of interior space and nearly 2,000 square feet of wraparound terrace.

A WEST VILLAGE WATERFRONT RETREAT

The design approach centers on subtle contrast and evolution: organic finishes meet sculptural forms; clean architectural lines are softened by warm textures; and contemporary elements are juxtaposed with curated vintage finds. The goal was to create a space that feels effortlessly collected rather than staged, evoking the sense that the home has grown naturally over time.

RIGHT AT HOME

Throughout, a palette of tactile materials and warm neutrals sets the tone—echoing the soft light that floods the space through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hudson.

FINDING THE PERFECT BALANCE

Quarter-sawn walnut and stone architectural details, already present in the space, were embraced as anchors for the interior scheme. In response, custom furnishings and millwork were selected to speak to the richness of the architectural language without overwhelming it.

UNFOLDING LAYERS

“My approach was to create a space that feels both refined and effortless—where every piece tells a story and the interiors unfold in layers of history and modernity,” said Guillaume Coutheillas, founder of frenchCALIFORNIA.

HONORING DESIGN HERITAGE

To deepen the story, we sourced a distinctive mix of vintage and artisanal pieces from the UK, Paris, Michigan, and Louisiana—regions known for their enduring design heritage.

These included 18th- and 19th-century ceramics, one-of-a-kind objects, and select contemporary artworks from Nova Gallery, including pieces by Amélie Ducommun, Christine Flynn, and Andrés Galeano. This thoughtful interplay between past and present lends a sense of character, allowing the residence to feel personal, rooted, and refined.

RETREAT IN THE SKY

The penthouse’s wraparound terrace, spanning nearly 2,000 square feet, was designed as an outdoor extension of the interiors. Through subtle vignettes—dining nooks, relaxed lounge areas, and carefully placed greenery—the terrace becomes a true living space, offering a feeling of retreat in the sky. The same principles of warmth, flow, and restraint that define the interiors are mirrored outdoors, ensuring a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
